My parents are in Commonwealth Senior Living at Hillsville. My mom has a special need that they're not familiar with and they haven't been actively trying to do anything to rectify that. I kind of had to jump up and down and make a fuss. I just had to be assertive for my parents because they won't ask for help. The staff members care very much. They're willing to work with my parents and deal with their idiosyncrasies and just take them as they are and see if they can help them fit into their system. I can help mom and dad by calling and saying, "OK, it's Monday, so you need to put your laundry in the laundry basket." It's just a matter of getting enough communication going with the staff because my sister originally initiated the conversation, so I don't know them so well. The food is good and it's very individualized. If you want a hamburger, you can get a hamburger or whatever's on the menu. I stayed and had supper with them one night and that wasn't a problem either. They're very accommodating and willing to work with whatever appetite you have or don't have. They offer a drive in the country to see the leaves and things like that, but mom and dad just won't participate. They have a rose garden and an enclosed courtyard, but dad doesn't want to be there, so I haven't encouraged them to go outside for any reason because he may not come back. The grounds and everything are beautifully taken care of. It's a nice place. It doesn't look old and rundown or anything like that, but like everyone else, they're overworked and understaffed. They try hard, and they care. The facility is clean and well-kept. They don't need paint or anything like that.

Commonwealth Senior Living at Hillsville was the closest to where we live. The staff was super nice and answered all of our questions. Everything went well. We saw kind of an apartment because we were going to have both my parents in the same room and it was a little bit bigger than just a single room. Everything looked good. They take really good care of the building and the property there. We were there kind of mid-morning and I think the residents were in one of the rooms doing some crafts. They gave us a list of all the activities that they could participate in if they chose to, and they let us know what would be happening. Their dining area was very clean and very neat. I haven't tried an actual meal, but I have been to several events at the Commonwealth. I have had their food but not as a meal and it was very good. They had a gazebo, a little patio area in between the buildings, and a covered front porch. We were very well impressed and I wouldn't have had a problem having my parents there. We would have felt comfortable having them stay there.

They don't have enough staff right now to take care of the residents. They have one nurse and everyone else is an assistant so they cant make any decisions. The person that runs the location is never there for you to ask the questions that you have and then also with one nurse there is no nurse to answer questions. I would not recommend. Until they fix this problem things will not be good.

We chose Commonwealth Senior Living at Hillsville for my mother-in-law. When we went in to look at the facility, it was clean and nice. There was plenty of staff. All the residents looked happy, and it just seemed like a good atmosphere. She started out as memory care, and they moved her to assisted living. She seemed so much happier, and she's content. She was in a nursing home before, and she was depressed and kept wanting to go home. She never even mentioned "home" since she moved here; her overall being is better. The staff members are all very attentive. They make the residents feel like they're home. When you go to visit, they're friendly. I've been in a lot of places where the staff seems like they're stressed out and all agitated, but the staff are happy there. They seem like they like their jobs. In terms of the food, she hasn't complained about anything. She says, "You don't have to bring me anything. They feed us plenty here." They get three meals, snacks, and drinks. They're well taken care of there. I'm just really pleased with it. She enjoys getting to mingle with the other residents. They do crafts and exercises, and she's been all around. It's always clean and everything is in its place. She's getting what she needs there at a reasonable price.

My parents were in this establishment for 3 months. Sadly the experience they endured was stressful and disappointing. Management will promise you to get things done you are not happy about but does the minimum amount of work to do it. Don’t believe the salesperson hype that you will be told. If management is around to ask questions. Emailing and phone calls had to be done due to COVID-19 yet answers should be at management’s fingertips some took days till we heard back. Call buttons can take up to half an hour to be answered yet again management will deny it. More than occasions I was FaceTiming my parents so I’ve timed the response of them coming to the rooms. The aids and med techs are hardworking and wonderful sadly upper management is not. The room they were in needed painting, face plates on fixtures we grotty. Shower seat was wooden and shabby. Seals around the shower were dirty. Window screen was ripped. The food is not farm to table unless that means via freezer. Dinners served to the rooms were cold at times. Some dinners inedible. There was only bingo as activities because of COVID but the other residents looked like they enjoyed it.
