I recently became a guardian for a friend. Due to memory issues he is not able to live on his own any longer. I toured a few facilities and decided on Sunrise because when visiting the memory care side of the facility, the residents in Sunrise were much more engaged and happy then in other facilities. My friend is still active and needs the engagement and interaction that I saw at Sunrise.

I chose Sunrise Senior Living of Wilmington for my brother. It's convenient. It was well taken care of. It was airy. The people there, or at least the person I spoke to there, Chris, were very helpful. The rooms were adequate. They were empty, so it didn't matter, the ones that I saw. Many people that I met were very nice, but I only met a few because it was a quick tour. I was looking more for the kind of place it was, the kind of room it was, and their knowledge of long-term insurance if they had handled it, or if they knew how to handle it. At that point, my main concern was their knowledge of long-term care insurance. I think they had transportation.

Overall, we have had a positive experience at Sunrise of Wilmington. The leadership team really cares about their residents and the quality of care that they provide. They take concerns seriously, and investigate them thoroughly. They are also willing to spend the necessary time to speak with the resident/family and decide the best plan of action for care. A minor place for improvement would be the responsiveness of the care staff. Sometimes the wait times get a little bit long. Also, Mom has some cognitive impairment, and she may not fully be aware of her options for dinner or activities. Some of the staff will help clarify that for her, which is fantastic. Others perhaps, not so much. As for the food, I have heard complaints from other residents as well as my Mom. I have tasted the food myself and it is amazingly bland. In some cases, they make food far too spicy, and yet it is still tasteless. Many times the rice will be crunchy and hard. This is the one place where I think things could really be improved. The quality of the ingredients seem reasonable, so I think it is just in the preparation. Overall, I would recommend this facility to family and friends.

Sunrise of Wilmington has a new business plan where they are taking on residents with higher levels of disabilities. This is a group that is underserved outside of skilled nursing environments so that's a good thing for families that need that level of care. However Sunrise needs more staff to adequately provide care for that population because those people often require 2 aides working together to provide appropriate care. Accordingly, wait times for help with daily activities such as getting out of bed and dressing can be quite long. Also Sunrise has no shower facilities for non-ambulatory residents so they can only receive bed baths which can impact skin care long term. The staff is very friendly, caring and well intentioned but they have difficulty keeping up with the work loads, including care by aides, servers in the dining room, etc. In fairness that seems to be an industry-wide problem but it's exacerbated by the high level of care that many Sunrise residents require. I would recommend that families considering Sunrise ask careful questions regarding the care plan the facility prepares for their family member and monitor closely whether the care plan is being followed. I moved my loved one out as they could not provide the care that he needed.
