It’s a stressful time having to move a loved one into long term care. My grandmother has been there several months. The staff at Universal has been phenomenal in helping her adjust to her new home. Her nurses (especially Michelle) and CNAs are amazing. Everyday I come to see her she is smiling, talking, up and dressed, and clean. She was there years ago under different management and I must say, it looks like new management has made a positive impact! I’m so thankful for the care they provide. I was shocked when I went for a visit and the DON, scheduler, staff development nurse, central supply, literally almost everyone knew my grandmother and her needs! Everyone is so helpful, it doesn’t matter if she is on their hall or not, everyone has been so wonderful to her.

My mother was a recent patient at this facility. The facility is very clean. Mother received great care! The new administrator is very "colorful" and extremely nice.

My mother was a resident of Universal Health Care for 36 days. Prior to being admitted there for short term rehabilitation, she was able to talk clearly, walk with the assistance of a walker and a nurse, and she could feed herself. In a little more than one month’s time, my mother could do none of those things and her life came to a sad and tragic end. At least two weeks before she passed, my mother was unable to swallow so rather than having a therapist come out and give her a swallow test, food, water and daily medications were not being given to her. We were never notified of this serious issue. Near the end of her life she couldn’t even speak to her family. With her glazed-over eyes, she looked right through us as if we weren’t there. I received a phone call from a nurse there telling me mom was non-responsive and they thought it would be a good idea to call an ambulance to have her checked out. She said they weren’t sure if mom was in the beginning stages of passing away or what. You will NEVER be able to convince me they DIDN’T know in their heart of hearts, that our mother WAS going to pass away due to their negligence. They only wanted to appear to care to deflect any accusations of neglect. When she was brought in to the ER at Randolph Hospital, she was non-responsive, she was extremely dehydrated to the point that her tongue looked like a prune, her a-fib was out of control, her blood pressure was way too high, she was in renal failure, she was down to 87 pounds, her potassium levels were much too high and she had many scabs and bruises in various stages of healing as well as a large bedsore at the base of her spine. Within 6 days, our mother left this earth and went to her heavenly home. What a sweet reunion she must have experienced that day but what a sad loss for those she left behind. Since our mother’s passing, I called a prominent attorney in Greensboro and learned he had sued Universal Health Care several times in the past. After sharing what happened to our mother, this same attorney told me he wanted to take the case but couldn’t. He definitely feels this case involving our mother was one of negligence. He ALSO said with the “COVID Legal Immunity Bill", we can’t win. He said they will claim they were understaffed due to COVID. He said even if it isn’t true, that will take us to the Court of Appeals, even if we win at trial. His last sentence was the most sobering one to read…”This is what happens without the fear of civil liability, nursing homes will do what they want without any fear of accountability.” This attorney is the ONLY one who spoke the truth to me and I met with one and emailed several. There’s an old saying, “evil flourishes when good men do nothing.” This definitely rings true when it comes to Universal Health Care and their staff. The staff at Universal may get away with providing this type of “care”, and I use that word loosely, but ONE DAY we’ll all have to give an account of what we’ve done. I’d hate to be standing in your shoes when you’re questioned about this and so many other precious souls who’ve suffered the same fate as our mother, only to be covered up and dismissed by your staff. I have yet to hear these words from anyone at Universal Health Care, “we’re so sorry for the loss of your mother”. I’m guessing they have no plans to say those words because saying them would mean they’re admitting guilt. Well, they ARE guilty!! My mother didn’t receive “care” there, instead she endured neglect. One day all of us will probably need to be in an assisted living facility or nursing home. I can only hope the employees of Universal Health Care receive the same kind of “care” they provided my mom and countless others. Based on what I’ve shared, if you still choose to move your loved one here, prepare yourself for the heartache that will surely follow. May God be with you and give you His grace and peace as you make this difficult decision for your loved one.
