I toured Vaca Valley Living for my mom. It was very clean. They were very organized. I liked that they had the monthly calendar of the schedule of activities, and they seemed very, very concerned to keep the residents involved, active, and stimulated. I like the rooms. They were bright, and they were clean. There is a lot of space and it was a Jack-and-Jill bathroom that my mother only had to share with one other person, who had a room on the other side. Where she is now, there is sort of like a community bathroom that five people shared, and then there was a shower for like 10 people. Here, she's sharing a shower with just one other person and a toilet with just one other person. So I like that, too. The staff seemed very cheerful and caring.

Be sure to label each and every belonging of your loved ones. Items tend to disappear because of the residents don’t remember where to put things. Residents tend to leave things in common areas and other residents may pick them up and put them in their own rooms. Having everything labeled makes it easier for the staff to return things to the right rooms.

Vaca Valley Living was strictly memory care. I wouldn't recommend them for residents with short-term memory issues that don't have behavioral problems or aren't screaming out or yelling. The people there were screaming during every meal. The staff was very young, immature, and inexperienced; it was chaotic. Her room was a good size, but it wasn't very homey. She had a shared room and a shared bathroom, which separated the room. The food was awful. It was like pasta every single night with no vegetables, and they served a really a tiny amount. They had one activity person, and the activities weren't every day. The facility was very new, modern, and updated.
