After hip surgery, I needed to find a skilled nursing facility, where my recuperation was thought to be normal and my stay was anticipated as a week or ten days. However, instead of the anticipated week stay, I ended up having to be there for about three months due to unexplained wounds on my lower leg that became infected. So, I’d like to share my experiences at Vista Knoll Specialized Care and Rehabilitation Center as an “insider,” meaning a patient, to help others who are faced with the choosing a facility, The first thing I noticed at Vista Knoll was that the staff here was compassionate and caring. The physical and occupational therapy departments tailored exercises to each individual in order to help them recuperate quickly, and the therapists buoyed our spirits in the process. There were many caring staff members, and it is difficult to list them all. However, I would like to thank some of the outstanding ones who have consistently gone above and beyond their duties to help me and others: Extra special thanks to RNA/CNA, Ray, who greatly lifted my spirits during these months by teaching me how to play the ukulele, then giving me his own ukulele when I left Vista Knoll. His great generosity touched me deeply. He managed to bring staff and patients together as a group for musical therapy, which was one of the most enjoyable, healing activities during my stay. CNA, Jade, who brought me to church and then took me with her family to dinner afterwards also helped me weather the unexpected time I had to stay. Candiace, saw to it that the the food was nutritious and varied, brought in homemade goodies, and was kind enough to take me out on a pass; The activities director, Marilyn helped patients by providing engaging, lively activities throughout the day; the facility support staff who maintained the beautiful grounds and kept the buildings clean; all of the therapy staff and volunteers who encouraged me daily; the sweet, student nurses, who made special trips to bring me coffee without me even having to ask. Taken together, all these things provide an atmosphere beneficial to healing and overall well-being, and helped me to get through the medical treatment that I did not expect when I entered.

Read moreMy mother-in-law has been at Vista Knolls for 5 days. I cannot get anyone to communicate with me, my messages are not returned, and I have yet to speak with a primary care doctor about what is going on. With the Covid issue this is very difficult as we cannot be there to check on her.....
